Five lines from the piyyut "Man, why do you fall asleep" written by Rabbi Yehuda Ibn Balaam, who lived in Seville in the middle of the 11th century.
The inspiration for the piyyut is taken from the biblical book of Jonah in which it is told how during a great storm in which the ship almost sank, Jonah descended to the stern of the ship and fell asleep.
The metaphorical question is of course also relevant today and can be asked on a large number of issues, from the climate crisis to government corruption.
