Binational academy dedicated to musical creation

ARCo - Art, Research and Creation opus 2024 - is a bi-national Franco-Austrian academy dedicated to musical creation and open to the international scene.

Created in 2019 by Elisabeth Gutjahr and the composers Yann Robin, Henry Fourès, in collaboration with the ensembles Multilatérale and Les Métaboles, it is aimed at the new generation of composers and performers, in order to guide them in their training and to accompany them in their professional integration.

Each year, ARCo is led by the Multilatérale and takes place alternately at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria, and at the GMEM, the Centre National de Création Musicale based in Marseille. While these two prestigious institutions share a common interest in serving music, they also complement each other in their activities. The first, located in one of the world’s most famous cultural metropolises, Salzburg, is a benchmark school for training the artists of tomorrow, not only in Austria but throughout Europe. The
GMEM, for its part, is a musical production tool linked to new technologies, at the cutting edge of innovation, while remaining committed to bringing together artistic teams and audiences on a daily basis.

With the aim of providing excellent training for 12 carefully selected young composers, 2 string quartets and 6 singers, ARCo brings together an expert teaching team with a wide range of aesthetic backgrounds at these exceptional venues. For ten days each year, more than twenty professionals share, research and create the music of tomorrow with the students. Each student is given a fully immersive experience by the academy’s tutors, Francesco Filidei, Henry Fourès, Elisabeth Gutjahr, Antoine Maisonhaute, Donatienne Michel-Dansac, Sarah Nemtsov, Eva Reiter, Yann Robin, Christian Sebille and Johannes Maria Staud.
Contributing to this creative effervescence, soloists from the Multilatérale and Métaboles ensembles, directed by Léo Warynski, accompany the students and work hand in hand with them. To make the experience even richer, a number of concerts are held throughout the academy, open to all
audiences, «urbi» and «orbi» of the host venues. A fervent advocate of contemporary repertoire and new
works, ARCo offers a varied programme combining major existing works with the creations of the trainees
by the ensembles and artists present.
During this time of encounter, transmission, exchange and sharing are at the heart of the relationship and
spread among all the participants: ARCo stimulates a social ebullition full of inventiveness and becomes a
fertile ground for experimentation and creation.
