About
Hugo Queirós is a Portuguese Bass Clarinet and Clarinet Freelancer. Since a few years ago, he started to get interested in the low clarinets, what led him into Bern - Switzerland, where he is doing a Master in Specialized Performance in Bass Clarinet, under the leadership of Professor Ernesto Molinari.
Besides the deep work with the solo repertoire for Bass and Contrabass Clarinet, in this master Hugo is doing a lot of work into new music in various formations and with all the clarinets.
Hugo started is musical life in an amateur wind band with 8 years old. After a few years studing in his home town, Viana do Castelo, Hugo get into the a bachelor in ESMAE - Oporto, under the guidance of Nuno Pinto where he practice most of the clarinet classic and standard reportoire. At the same time, he had masterclass's with some of the greatest's clarinetist as Michel Arrignon, Phillipe Cupper, Larry Combs, António Saiote, Romain Guyot, Paolo Beltramini, Jonathan Coller, Ronald Van Spaendonck, Michel Lethiec, among others. Hugo also took bass clarinet masterclass's with Harry Sparnaay, Henri Bok, Luis Gomes and Rocco Parisi.
In 2011, Hugo finished the Master in Music Interpretation where he made a intensive research about Portuguese Music for Bass Clarinet. At this time, Hugo started to play the bass clarinet as a major instrument and this leaded to a serie of solo recitals under his thesis.
During this academic years Hugo collect many diferent experiences, playing in many academic projects, as wind and symphonic repertoire, working along with new composers and helping to grown up new compositions.
Besides his solo projects, he has public appeared with many formations as: Grupo Música Nova, FAM Ensemble, Vertigo Ensemble, Orquestra Sinfónica da Póvoa do Varzim, Orquestra do Norte, Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa, Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, where he worked with conductors as David Robertson, Pablo Heras-Casado, François-Xavier Roth, Michael Form, Eugene Corporon, Alex Schillings, Jan Cober, Douglas Bostock, José Rafael Pascual Vilaplana, Yuri Nasushkin and Rodolfo Saglimbeni.
Hugo won 1st Prize in the Solo Bass Clarinet Category at 10th International Clarinet Competition "Cittá di Carlino" (2012 / Italy) and the 1st Prize at the I Bass Clarinet Competition "Julian Menéndez" in Àvila (2012 / Spain).
In 2013 Hugo was acepted to participat in Lucerne Festival Academy under the artistic direction of Pierre Boulez and the guidance of the Ensemble Intercontemporain Musicians. Also in 2013, Hugo participated in Ensemble Akademie Freiburg, where he worked with the Ensemble Recherche Musicians.
