Foliage

Foliage was completed in October 2023 for the Mizzou New Music Ensemble. Inspiration for the piece was taken from in the image of sunlight streaming through canopies of leaves, hence the title. I find a loose comparison to this piece in Maurice Ravel’s solo piano work Jeux d’Eau (1901), the title of which roughly translates to ‘water games.’ While Ravel sought to sonically reflect the play of water, as in a fountain, I sought to reflect the play of light.
