This piece is based on a 14th century virelai by Jacob de Senleches, called “Le Harpe de Melodie”. It uses Markov models to analyze pitches and phonemes in that piece, and recasts them, embedding Senleches' original poetic and musical structure at various levels. It begins in stylistic imitation of the 14th century Avignon court, and the same syntactical networks then reappear in increasingly ramified forms. Small changes in which musical objects are taken as primitive pool into radical downstream effects, eventually disintegrating into expiratory microtonal perturbations, like a decaying manuscript.
