2021 CALL FOR SCORES International Composition Workshop

Ensemble in Residence 2021: Ensemble Ars Nova (France)
Instructors 2021: Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber (composer), Gregory Vajda (conductor, composer) and Peter Eötvös (conductor, composer)
Dates: Monday, August 16, 2021 to Friday, August 20, 2021

The 2021 edition offers young composers the following opportunities:
- Workshopping a 5-minutes piece for wind octet specially written for this summer academy and for the musicians of Ensemble Ars Nova
- Testing existing sketches and/or ideas with musicians of choice
- Asking and experimenting with experienced musicians.
- Masterclass and private lessons with Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber
- Working with young conductors selected for this edition of ECA, under the supervision of Gregory Vajda and Peter Eötvös
- Public concert at the end of the Academy
The compositional workshop will be run in parallel with the conductor’s workshop where they will also rehearse the Eötvös and Stravinsky Octets. Composers are welcome to participate as listeners.

Eligibility
- No Age Limit
- Applicants from a variety of musical aesthetics and backgrounds are welcomed and encouraged to apply.
Priority will be given to composers at the start of their careers and/or undergoing training at a higher education institution

Fee
Tuition and Lodging are fully covered by the ECA for all Associate Composers. Unfortunately, we cannot cover the lodging for Fellow Composers for 2021. *Travel fees are at the cost of all the participants.

Deadline for the application on 30th June 2021.

Registration procedure

Subject: Full name - ECA 2021 Composition Workshop
1. Link (without expiration date) to exactly two (2) pdf scores TOTAL:
- of the two works submitted, one should be your best work (regardless of instrumentation)
- and one must be no more than 5 years old (originally written, not a revision)
2. Link (without expiration date)to recordings of the two scores should be uploaded only as .aac, .m4a or .mp3 formats as part of the application form. (NO MIDI FILE)
3. Documents in a PDF format
- Motivation letter
- CV
- Brief biography

Participation Details
Associate Composers
- Must write a short brand new work of maximum 5 minutes which will be workshopped by Ensemble Ars Nova.
- This new work will be viewed in a private lesson and masterclass by Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber.
- This new work will be rehearsed and conducted by selected young conductors of this edition of ECA, under the supervision of Gregory Vajda and Peter Eötvös.
- Score and Parts must be ready by End of July to ensure that the conductors and musicians have sufficient preparation time.
- Composers must attend all masterclasses and rehearsals.
- Composers will be entitled to a professional development workshop during the academy that focuses on career development and other aspects of what the job entails.
- All compositions will be played in a final concert on Friday August 20, 2021

Fellow Composers
- May present existing pieces and/or write a new work which will be viewed by Claire Melanie Sinnhuber.
- Composers must attend all masterclasses and rehearsals.
- Composers will be entitled to a professional development workshop during the academy that focuses on career development and other aspects of what the job entails.
- Composers will also have the opportunity to attend a LAB session where they are free to test any and every material they need to within their allocated time with the following musicians: 2 fl, cl, bsn, 2tpt, 2tmb. Please indicate 3 instrumentals choices in order of preference (max 4 instruments). We will try to honour as best your requests and specific project demands.

You may also write to us to attend the academy as an active listener for all sessions – no scores and recording required.
Participants will - by submitting their application - hand over all rights on video and audio recordings to the ECA: this includes all pictures and videos taken on and off the stage.

Participants will - by submitting their application - also give their permission and approval to the ECA to use their names and pictures in press releases related to this summer academy.
