My goal for this piece was to transcribe, or more accurately, re-imagine one of my earlier electro-acoustic works for string quartet. In order to simulate the noise, electronic sonorities and subtleties of recorded real world sound, it proved necessary to use a lot of extended techniques for the strings. In the electro-acoustic piece, a prominent, although discreet, part of the work is a live recording of an excerpt from Bach’s Goldberg Variations no. 30. In the string quartet it’s further obscured, and seems simultaneously alien and oddly fitting in the works internal logic.
