Time of Music Festival and Summer Academy 2023 will take place on 4-10 of July 2023 in Viitasaari, Finland. Time of Music Summer Academy offers unique opportunities to study contemporary music with the world’s first and foremost composers, pedagogues and musicians in an inspiring environment with colleagues from all around the world. Application to the courses is now open. Young professionals and advanced students are welcome to apply for the courses.
Summer Academy teachers and ensembles participating in the Composition course are artists-in-residence during the festival. Summer Academy 2023 offers three courses: Composition Course by Liza Lim, Contemporary Piano by Marilyn Nonken, and John Cage: Song Books course by Joan La Barbara.
Composition Course
The composer course consists of public lectures and private student lessons. It is possible to apply for the course with an option to compose a new piece for a chamber ensemble formation (available ensembles will be Quatuor Bozzini, Riot Ensemble and Norbotten Neo, 2-8 musicians) which will be premiered during the last days of the festival, or without the option of that. The exact instrumentation available will be notified to the accepted applicants.
The age limit for the course is 32 years (born after 1.7.1991). The course is taught in English.
The course fee (340 without a piece, 370 with a new piece) includes participation in the course, open lessons and workshops, and free entrance to all of the festival concerts.
Passive student option.
Liza Lim
Liza Lim (Australia) is a composer, educator and researcher whose music focusses on collaborative and transcultural practices. Beauty, rage & noise, ecological connection, and female spiritual lineages are at the heart of recent works. Her large-scale cycle Extinction Events and Dawn Chorus (2018) has found especially wide resonance internationally and highlights ecological listening to beyond-the-human realms. Widely commissioned by some of the world’s pre-eminent orchestras and ensembles, Lim is Sculthorpe Chair of Australian Music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and was a Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in 2021-22.
Lim’s output spans intimate and collaborative instrumental solos, to five strikingly different operas and her catalogue has been published by Casa Ricordi (Milan, London, Berlin) since 1992. Her music appears on 8 monographic CDs and 26 other discs. CD releases and premieres of her work have consistently appeared on The New Yorker’s annual Notable lists 2013-2021. In Finland she was composer in residence at Musica nova Helsinki 2003.
