As a part of the annual Ostrobothian Contemporary Music Festival (Uuden Musiikin Lokakuu) held in Oulu, Finland, there will be a composition masterclass given by Kaija Saariaho from Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 October 2022. Deadline to apply is May 31st with results announced in late July.
Teaching languages are Finnish, English, and French
The call supports participation as both an active or passive student.
ACTIVE STUDENTS (Tuition: 295 €):
Four active students will be selected to attend the masterclass. In preparation, selected participants will compose a new piece of music lasting 3-7 minutes for all four members of the Kaaos ensemble (flute, saxophone, guitar and percussion—the complete list of available instruments are listed below.)
PASSIVE STUDENTS (Tuition: 80 €):
Will be able to follow the masterclass as well as attend all festival concerts free of charge.
Note* available instruments for the Kaaos Ensemble are as follows:
- flute (doubling piccolo, alto and bass flute)
- alto saxophone (doubling soprano, tenor and baritone saxophone)
(the ensemble kindly asks that you choose a maximum of two different saxophones and two flutes per piece)
percussion
- vibraphone (with motor)
- suspended cymbal (medium)
- pair of bongos
- two tom-toms (small, medium)
- orchestral bass drum
- tam-tam (medium)
- all the basic sticks, mallets and beaters
- triangle beaters, brushes, superball mallets and bow
