For composers who identify as women
Musiqa is proud to announce another round of commissioning competitions for national and local emerging composers. This year we are offering increased stipends of $2000 for both the national Emerging Composer Commission and the local Catalyst Commission. In addition, in order to increase the presence of under-represented voices in chamber music, the national Emerging Composer Commission will be open this year only to applicants who identify as women. Applications open on July 22, 2024 and close on August 9.

Musiqa’s Emerging Composer Commission program identifies promising artistic talent and provides performance opportunities with an innovative, contemporary music chamber ensemble. In the interest of increasing under-represented voices in chamber music repertoire, the 2024 competition will be limited to applicants who identify as a woman. The selected composer will receive:
      •     A commission for a 4-7 minute work to be premiered at a Musiqa performance during the 2024-25 season.
      •     $2000 stipend.
      •     $500 travel stipend.
      •     A professional audio recording of the commission.

Previous Emerging Composer Commission winners Oswald Huỳnh and Ryne Siesky will join Musiqa's Art Board in adjudicating this year's applications.

Musiqa’s Catalyst Commission identifies promising artistic talent from the Houston area and provides professional opportunities in an innovative, contemporary music chamber ensemble.

The winner will receive:
      •     Mentorship from Musiqa’s artist board composers.
      •     A commission for a 4-7 minute work to be premiered at a Musiqa performance.
      •     A $2,000 stipend.
