The ULYSSES Ensemble
The Ulysses Ensemble is a brand new touring chamber ensemble created by the Ulysses Network. The ensemble will be made up of young contemporary musicians from all over Europe.
We are offering an exciting opportunity for young artists to be part of the 2017 Ulysses Ensemble. Over the summer of 2017 this ensemble will get the opportunity to work with highly renowned composers and conductors, workshop new repertoire, perform with professional contemporary musicians and attend three of Europe's leading contemporary music festivals.
The instruments we are accepting applications for are: violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, percussion, harp, piano and guitar. Applicants should be between 18 and 30 years old.
There is no fee to take part in this project. Your travel and accommodation expenses will be covered, as well as some meals.
Here are the details of the three stops in the 2017 Ulysses Ensemble's journey:
> IRCAM: Monday 26 June - Saturday 1 July 2017
As part of IRCAM's Manifeste Academy, the Ulysses Ensemble of around 15 instrumentalists will be directed by Heinz Holliger in a week of masterclasses focusing on key repertoire and pieces with electronics. They will be joined by soprano Sarah Maria Sun and soloists of Ensemble Intercontemporain who will work alongside the students as well as perform in the final concert on Saturday 1 July. The repertoire will include Schonberg's Sechs kleine Klavierstucke opus 19, Webern's Funf Stucke fur Orchester, opus 10 and Castiglione's Risognanze. In addition, Heinz Holliger will conduct chamber music works: Schoenberg's Herszegewachse, opus 20, Webern's Funf Geistliche Lieder, opus 15, Holliger Increshantum and Maresz Sul Segno for harp, guitar, cymbalum, doublebass and electronics.
> Aldeburgh Music: Wednesday 5 July - Friday 14 July 2017
The Ulysses Ensemble will travel from Paris to Aldeburgh to join six young composers to develop new music as well as prepare key repertoire pieces from the last 100 years. Oliver Knussen and Colin Matthews lead a group of eminent tutors who in recent years have included Michael Thompson, horn, Zoe Martlew, cello, and Melinda Maxwell, oboe. All new music will be showcased in a final concert on Friday 14 July and will be repeated in a high profile concert in the 2018 Aldeburgh Festival.
> Royaumont Foundation: Monday 21 August - Saturday 26 August
The final stop in the 2017 Ulysses Ensemble journey will be part of the Voix Nouvelles Academy at the Royaumont Foundation in France. Here the ensemble will work on a range of contemporary repertoire, from Ligeti's well-known Chamber Concerto, to Raphael Cendo's "Corps" piano concerto with soloist Wilhelm Latchoumia, and to a new commission from young composer Eiko Tsukamoto.
