James Batty is a London-based pianist, composer and sound artist with a special interest in microtonal and electroacoustic music. His debut commercial release, “Sanctuary (Overtones and Deviations)” (released on zeromoon and Frozen Light, 2016) combines microtonal piano compositions with electronic soundscapes and has received critical acclaim and radio play around the world. He recently presented his work at EUROMicroFest 2017 in Freiburg, and has previously created music for the BBC Singers, Manchester Cathedral, FringeNYC and World AIDS Day 2016, as well as scoring a short film premièred at BAFTA. His competition successes include the Alan Bush Prize (Highly Commended), EPTA Young Composers’ Competition (First Prize), BBC Young Composer of the Year (Highly Commended) and selection for the UK-wide SPNM Shortlist. James is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music with Gary Carpenter, having previously studied at Chetham’s School of Music, Trinity College Cambridge, the Gnesin Academy in Moscow and the University of Westminster.
