During the workshops, the workshop participants will be collectively improvising, composing and shaping a musical work which may also involve elements of text, movement and various forms of introduced sound. The principal aim will be to reflect on and experience collaborative processes leading to the development of a new and contemporary work of artistic integrity that also brings to the fore, the particular skills of the workshop participants.
“Participatory making” and “process” are the basis for this project.
Composers, instrumentalists, singers and performers are invited to take part in a course of workshops devoted to making a collaborative performance piece. Further the course seeks to examine ways of initiating and integrating audience participations for both young and old during its performance.
Further to this, by integrating the possibilities of public participation in the final performance, the course seeks to reflect on the social relationship of the performers to their audience as well as opening spontaneous and joyful windows of creation and improvisation according to the audience’s participatory responses during the performance. The performance space and the participatory nature of the work will therefore also become an intrinsic part of the final collaborative score “Delight” to be performed during the last day of the festival. We will let the words of the actors to their audience in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream lead us in our collaborative explorations: “our true intent is all for your delight!”
Required is an interest in making an performing a musical performance work together. No specific knowledge of group composition is needed however it is expected that all applicants have some performance experience. Please provide a short paragraph that expresses your particular interest in joining this course. The age limit for the course is 35 years (born after 1.7.1989). The course is taught in English.
Cathy Milliken is an international award-winning performer and composer known for her evocative instrumental and vocal works.
She moves between manifold musical worlds, taking great joy in facilitating creativity and participation. The diversity and relevance of her output has won her international recognition as a leading composer, creative director, educational consultant and performer.
Born in Brisbane and based in Berlin, Milliken completed a degree in Australia majoring in performance (piano and oboe) and continued her studies in Europe under Heinz Holliger and Maurice Bourgue. A founding member of Ensemble Modern, she worked extensively with artists such as György Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Fred Frith, and Frank Zappa.
From 2005 – 2012, Cathy Milliken was Director of the Education Program of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Participatory compositional projects in recent years have taken her to South Africa, Japan and Oman.
Milliken has composed for concert, opera, radio and film. Commissioners include Southbank Centre London, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Staatsoper Berlin and Musica Viva of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. International participatory compositions include Umculo Festival (South Africa), Future Labo (Japan), Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and Munich Biennale. A versatile performer and member of Ensemble Extrakte Berlin, Milliken is known for her sonic improvisations using oboe and voice.
Recipient of several awards, including the Prix Italia and the APRA AMCOS/AMC Art Music Award, Milliken was also Associate Composer of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra from 2018-20.
